How to Market Yourself

February 7, 2020

If you have gone to all the trouble of creating a podcast, you need to know how to get it out into the world. I mean, what’s the point without listeners? So you may have thought that thinking up the content for the podcast and recording it to a standard you are happy with, means the hard part is over. No, not at all. Nothing could be further from the daunting reality. Your trouble has only just begun. But it is all worth it in the end.

Target audience

Spend some time thinking about who your podcasts are designed for. The types of people that are going to be interested in the content. Once you have an idea in your head of who you are aiming the content at, you will have a better idea of how to create your marketing campaign. Spend some time thinking about the language your audience uses and the types of lives they live. The more you know about your audience, the better.

Website

You need to make sure you have a website. People are going to search online for something that your podcasts relate to, so that gives you an opportunity. If you have an attractive website that works well, you will want it to be discoverable. To do this, you need all your pages to have fully realized SEO (search engine optimization). Use your knowledge about your audience to load up the pages with keywords. What is your target audience likely to type into Google. Get this right, and the higher up the search results you will become. You will also need to add new content to the site regularly, so either with a weekly podcast or two or a blog. The content needs to be updated regularly so that you are able to keep an active audience.

Branding

It may be an idea to come up with a logo and some tag lines to add to the podcasts and add to the website. Your personal brand is important, and you want as many people as possible to recognize you from the logo, for example.

Social mediaYou will need to build up a social media presence on as many social media sites as possible. You will want high-quality posts that encourage the target audience to engage with it. This could mean a comment, a share, a click to the website, and ultimately to listen to the podcast. You may have several different reasons for creating content, like enhancing brand awareness where you just want as many impressions as possible, but if you want clicks, you may need to give tasters, you could have mini-videos or little stories. If all this sounds too much, there may be scope to outsource some of the hard work to other agents. They can be anywhere as you can pay suppliers in Malaysia, for example, online. Social media gives you an unprecedented opportunity to get your name out there. Marketing is not easy, but get it right, and you could be in for a big success.
