5 Skills Every Entrepreneur Needs To Succeed In Business
January 24, 2016
If you’ve found yourself on this blog, welcome. We can only assume you run a small business, or have the desire to do so. It’s our goal to give you advice and tools to turn your small business into a success. We do that with informational podcasts, live events, and – of course – blogs. Today, we’re looking specifically at the mindset and habits of successful entrepreneurs. What are the personal skills you need to develop if you’re to succeed in business? A good entrepreneur is not just smart, but well-rounded in the following areas.
Public speaking and presentations
It doesn’t come easily for everyone, but an entrepreneur can expect to do a lot of public speaking. Whether it’s giving pep talks to their employees or pitching to new clients and investors, it’s a core part of the job. Pitches and presentations are especially important. As a small business, you need to convince the bigger fish to take you seriously. Your presentations matter. With that in mind, brush up on your public speaking, and consider hiring a presentation design agency. It might just land you that big investor.
Intuition and gut instinct
We don’t deny that every entrepreneur needs hard work and dedication. However, hard work alone is not enough. Great entrepreneurs also have a certain intuition. They can sense the right direction, and they trust those instincts. It’s a skill that’s hard to pin down or define. It’s even harder to practice or sharpen. In some cases, you’ve either got it or you haven’t. Learn to trust your gut decisions. Go with your instincts, and that’s usually where success lies.
Communication
A business will never succeed without communication. At every level, the company should be talking and communicating. Employees should collaborate with each other. They should feel free to approach managers with ideas and concepts. Likewise, you, as the business owner, should communicate your vision and ideas for the company. It’s your job to make sure everyone’s on the same page. You also need to communicate this vision to investors, clients and everyone else around you.
Networking
As your business starts to take off, your entire job will become about networking. It’s about finding the right people to take your company to the next level. Pitching ideas, convincing investors, shmoozing new clients. Networking will become your job, so you better get good at it! Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Run your company with confidence, and that will shine through.
Productivity
An entrepreneur's job should be busy. Your schedule should be full. If it’s not, you’re probably missing something! That means working effectively and productively. If you don’t have the skills to blast through your to-do list, you’ll never build a successful company. In the early days, you’ll be wearing many hats, and flicking between responsibilities. You need a productive mindset to do that. Of course, at the same time, you must learn to delegate!
How many of these skills do you have, readers? And how many do you need to improve?
