How To Supercharge Your Own Motivation

Going into business takes guts and determination. There are no two ways about it. Having the drive to get up in the morning and face the difficulties that go along with being an entrepreneur can be an uphill slog. 

The motivation to start a business can be powerful on day one. Like a kid on the first day of school, excited to use their new pencil case, the novelty will have long worn off before you're a month into the term.

Remind Yourself Repeatedly Why You Got Into This

So where do we find the drive to have to deal with finding quotes from PVC hose suppliers, or chasing up on contractors to get that urgent bit of maintenance finishing? The menial aspects of any job are not the reason that you start doing the job in the first place. 

When you're bogged down in a series of unrelated problems, it can be hard to remember what the end goal was, or even what that initial spark felt like when you started the ball rolling. 

Build reminders into your routine. If your motivator is helping people out, make that one of your targets. We can all hit sales targets. But if one of your goals is to improve the day of one of your customers, how great would that feel? 

If you're doing it for the love of the product, immerse yourself in the product. Engage with people about it. Go out and look for the next stage of your product journey.  

Bringing The Passion Back

But if you're a business owner who has lost the passion for the people or the products, then you're no good to anyone. You can't lead your business without enthusiasm. You can't drive sales. And if you can't do these things, why would you ever expect your team to care. 

You can employ people to do tasks that aren't your thing. To lead a successful team, you need to have an infectious enthusiasm. If you get this through just doing part of the job that you love, then that is the job that you should be doing. 

Try and understand where it all went wrong for you. Think about the things that make you unhappy, and seek to change them. Be Careful not to just put all of your problems onto one of your staff. Identify someone who thrives on the jobs that you hate, and bring them into work with you. 

Work On Your Own Motivations Before Others

We often spend a lot of time in business thinking about what motivates other people. We'll get hung up on working everyone else out, we forget about ourselves. We may not be driven. We might just be on auto-pilot. 

If you don't understand your own motivations, you will never succeed. Take a good look at everything about your job and career. Think about what has got you working in previous roles. Whatever that motivating factor is, make sure you exploit that in yourself, before leading your team towards greatness.
