Your Workers, Your Responsibility

October 14, 2019

As soon as your team steps foot on your premises, they become your responsibility.

Workplace safety is something that should matter to you, and it should matter to your staff too. Everyone wants to be able to work in a space that they can feel safe in. Employees who feel safe will be able to tackle their work with confidence and enjoyment. But it is your moral responsibility to look after them. We are lucky that we live in a time that has so many measures in place now. Health and Safety matters. It is important that you understand why you should be taking care of the people in your employement.

Surroundings

Most employees don’t really care where they work, as long as they have space to do their job effectively. But it is up to you to be able to walk around the office or the shop floor and see what the potential hazards are. Doing a risk assessment will help you get a bigger picture of policies and procedures you can implement to keep everyone safe.

Stress

Stress and anxiety are some of the biggest reasons people are signed off work for extended periods of time. Many employees don’t have time to have great social lives and fit in their hobbies. Both of which contribute to lowering stress levels. If you are piling the work on, and not providing space for your staff to let off steam, you will find a few members will start to struggle. You aren’t in charge of their mental health and stress levels, but you can make sure that your business is not contributing to it. Team evenings will help.

Exits

It is important that you keep the exits clear at all times. If there is an emergency, then people are going to rush to the door to leave. If you have put large filing cabinets in the way, then you can be the cause of a fatality. It is also a good idea to have a shut-off switch installed that can turn all of your power off in the flick of a wrist.

Clean

Working in an office that smells like tuna and Cheetos is uncomfortable. Working in a factory, there are a lot of more industrial smells to deal with. In both cases, you choose to have someone come in and clean the place. Having a regular cleaner will mean that the carpets and the chemical resistant flooring that you have had installed are going to be in the best condition possible.

Talk

A lack of communication between you and the staff can cause a lot of problems. If you don’t know what is going on in their life outside of wor, even just a little, if something happens, that might impact your business you don't know. That is when rash decisions happen. So, what you should consider is having a weekly check i with all of your team members and have an open office door policy too.

If you look after your staff, they will take care of your business.
