Important Steps To A Greener Business

October 16, 2019

Running a small business is a big responsibility at times, people rely on you to earn their money to pay their bills, and there’s also an environmental impact on everything we do. In the current climate where we don’t know what’s happening in the future, it’s essential to know that business owners have to improve their processes and to fall into line with global expectations. We may think that if we only have a small business it won’t matter too much. However, we all know that even the slightest changes in the right direction can make a big difference to the world. So here are some tips on how to create a better business for the environment.

Waste

One of the ways we can make less of an impact on the environment is to use much less paper. It goes without saying that paper is a resource and that resource (As with anything else) is not unlimited. Having a paperless office in 2019 should be much more comfortable than having paper in the office. We do everything through our devices now, so there is no real reason to hold paper documents. This not only reduces paper waste, but the overall trade waste will be diminished, and that can’t be a bad thing. Of course, there may be times when these resources are needed, But if they are the exception to the rule, then your business will be making a significant impact on the world.

Reduce plastic

Cutting down on things such as water bottles from the coolers, and single-use plastic with buffets and so on will reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up being fly-tipped or finding its way into the ocean. It’s a great effort to show that you care about the environment and in making strides in the right direction to help save wildlife too.

Reduce emissions

Even just traveling to and from work will produce emissions. If you have a fleet of vehicles, however, these will multiply. It’s important to remember that the fewer miles you do, the less fossil fuel we have to burn. If you do have many vehicles, then it may be worth looking at alternatives. Maybe a hybrid vehicle or electric fuel. It may be worth asking your clients and visitors to reduce emissions where possible, as well. Since this will go in everyone’s favor. Maybe set up virtual meetings rather than physical ones?

Donations

When you hear about a cause that has been highlighted to you or has been brought to you before, regarding the environment, then it’s worth putting all of your energy into supporting it. Whether you’re able to make a cash donation or even just donate a little bit of time to a litter picking event, it will be remembered and go towards public opinion about your business. Not only that, but as with anything to do with the environment, it’s always positive since it’s the right thing to do.

Life and running a business, in particular, can be hard work so efforts towards improving emissions and the planet as a whole, can be important work. And it’s a big responsibility that should be taken seriously.
