How To Be The ‘Best Boss’

October 21, 2019

Managing people can be tough, and if you work for a large company with a lot of staff, then it can seem impossible to keep everyone happy. But with a bit of research and a little bit of common sense, you should hopefully receive some great feedback from your team. Of course, the team needs to be self-motivated enough to get the work done, but there’s no harm in management interacting with staff members, motivating them, and making them feel valued.

So here are some of how you can become the “best manager” and help your staff discover a healthy working relationship with you as management.

Nobody Is Perfect

First of all, knowing that nobody is perfect and that you will make mistakes as a manager will actually put you on a sound footing with your team. You only have to look at two different members of staff next to each other to realize that you’re never going to get it right for everybody. But if you confidently action your decisions, and think about how this will affect everyone. Then you should be able to keep most of the team happy most of the time. And staff that are happy in their roles will produce the best work. Just try asking everybody their opinion, and as long as you have tried your best to get to consult everyone before making big decisions, then you should be working out fine in the end.

Bend the rules

Of course, there are specific certain rules that everybody needs to abide by, such as health and safety, fire safety, and the law, of course. But sometimes allowing a little extra lunchtime, relaxing the dress code once every so often, or allowing people to bring food into the office, will help staff discover your kind side. Remember to encourage your team to take time off as well, as everyone needs to be well-rested to be able to work at a high level! Also, businesses that allow flexible working, and introduce practices that include bringing pets to work and listening to music as they work are actually discovering fantastic results with higher productivity. This may be a way you can learn how to increase staff efficiency in your warehouse, as well. It doesn’t matter where your staff is working, and in which environment, if they are happy they are going to be producing fantastic work for you.

Training

Keeping your staff trained to a high level and making sure that they are all happy with what they are doing, it’s going to improve their self-worth. It also makes the job a lot easier for them because they know exactly what is expected of them, staff who are undertrained and confused, are not happy and productive staff. Training also extends to your management style and your management team. If you train yourself in the ways to best manage your staff, then you will find it much easier to get things done and increase productivity all-round. Improving ourselves is one of the best ways to become great managers. This also extends to regular training rather than just one-off. Everything changes quickly in our current climate, so even if you train your staff when they start, within 6 to 12 months, you may find that those people aren’t as up to speed as they could be. It’s important to take control of this and make sure that everybody knows exactly what they are doing at all times.

Lead From The Front

Managers that just sit in an office barking orders at the staff aren’t ever going to be considered the ’best’ boss. It’s proven that if you get alongside the staff at difficult times and put the work in alongside them, you were going to gain a huge amount of respect. You don’t have actually to carry the workload but just sometimes supporting from the sidelines, or showing people how things are done in the quickest and most efficient way, will gain your staff and the team that is on your side. This is important as many studies have shown that it is the most effective way of producing an effective workforce. Of course, you’re also able to see everything when you’re in it. So as a manager, you won’t miss as much if you are getting involved and seeing how things are running with or without you there.

The main point about becoming the “best boss“ is to gain respect and make sure that you are managing with integrity. Actually, showing you care about your staff will also go further than anything else you can implement.
