The 3 Reasons Why your Employees Are Quitting
April 26, 2017
Not so long ago employees climbed the corporate ladder. But this ladder has been somewhat replaced by a lilypad system, which has a lot to do with the characteristics celebrated by Millennials.
Millennials now make up the majority of the workforce and part of their makeup is the idea of wasting their lives at one job; they would much rather experience all they can, hopping from one sector to another, one company to the next, until they find the job that suits them best. Basically, employees quit their jobs at a higher rate than ever before, and the majority of the reasons why are under the control of the employer.
To help you understand this a bit better, and thus help you better retain your employees, we have compiled a list of reasons why employees quit. It is now your responsibility to manage them.
The Boss
There is absolutely no evidence that states an employee needs to be friends with their boss, but they do need to have some sort of relationship, and a good one too. The boss is such an integral part of employees working life and that fact needs to be considered carefully. Direction, feedback, constructive criticism, one-to-one meetings, all sorts of things, which is why you may need to learn how to be a better boss. Basically, if the employee-boss relationship is toxic then your employee is going to lose confidence and commitment and even their enthusiasm, which is why it is the number one reason employees quit their jobs.
The Environment
The working environment at your company has a huge amount of sway over an employee’s happiness, and this is something that has a lot of variables to account for. It could be something like encouraging open communication among coworkers knowing that when a person has real friends at work they are more productive because they want to be there. However, it could equally be a shift in how you look at a certain aspect of your business. For example, instead of thinking about where to buy office furniture, you should be thinking about what office furniture will make your office more appealing to your employees. What will improve the environment of your office. Technology, new desks, and chairs, artwork on the wall, motivational posters. There is so much to think about when it comes to the environment, but if you don’t consider this important then prepare to see staff leave.
The Meaning
This is a huge trend among pretty much all Millennials; they want to have a job where the work feels like it is meaningful, where they suddenly realise this is what they want to do with their life. It is almost as if people have only just started understanding that they only have one shot at this life, one chance to make a difference – a real difference – a job that contributes to something much, much bigger than just themselves. It is an almighty move of ambition and one that requires managers and owners to shift the ground so that they are having an impact on the world, even if it is just in some small way. That is the employer’s responsibility; to help each employee connect to a reason of meaningfulness because if you don’t they will quit and find an employer that does.
