Why Asking For Help Doesn’t Mean You're Weak

March 21, 2019

One of the most dangerous aspects of running your own business is being trapped by your limiting self-beliefs. Perhaps you feel inadequate, or you're just learning how to get your head around this whole thing they call entrepreneurialism. But what many of us can suffer from is that need to be self-sufficient, to be a self-made person. And as such, we may not ask for help when it's necessary. Because we feel we have to stick through it all by ourselves and endure these difficulties. But also, from a very human perspective, some perceive asking for help as being a sign of weakness. This is not the case…
The Right Help Can Boost Your Business
Whether its outsourcing certain processes or getting financial help through business grants, we've got to make the most of the help when and where we can. Ultimately, it's these things that will help to improve the business. If we don't harness this help, we're doing our business a disservice. And in many ways, not getting the help can be the equivalent of cutting off our nose to spite our face. Getting the right people on board is a prerequisite because you don't know everything!
Learning To Ask For Help Means You Are Human
We all make mistakes and we can't think that we need to hold onto our business as tightly as possible, so we can ensure every process is perfect from our perspective. We will hit snags now and again and as such, we will need to ask for help. The sooner we get this into our heads, the better. Asking for help means that you are fallible, that you are prepared to make mistakes. And, you will make mistakes, so why don't you get this out of the way now?
It's All About The Business, Not You!
It's not personal, just business. And instead of putting our own ego on the line, we've got to think about everything that is for the benefit of the company. It's much more important than the sum of its parts. And if you think that you are sufficiently linked with the company, and the company cannot function without you, you are hindering its progress. The business is about the right people, the idea, the product, and everything, but also, you are part of this, because you steer the ship. But you're steering the ship of the business, not your own egotistical desires. Lots of people start a business because they want to be in charge of people, and so the ego is fed. But the sooner we get it out of our system that we aren't the most important thing, we can focus on what really matters.
It's not about weakness, asking for help is such an essential component that it gives us perspectives of what we're doing right as well as what we doing wrong. If you're someone that doesn't like to admit you made a mistake, and you'd rather cover it up, you will learn very quickly about what running a business entails. Ultimately, you've got to take this leap of faith, you've got to learn how to make mistakes, but you've also got to learn how to fix them. Running a business isn't about admitting that you’re weak at every opportunity, but it's about being the stupidest person in the room. That way, you will always be learning.
