Do You Really Think You’re The Only Thing Your Business Needs?

August 6, 2019

One of the most tempting things about setting up your own business is that you're in a position to have a degree of control over your career that simply isn't possible if you're working for someone else. After all, there are few things more frustrating than having to spend your entire working life following the orders of someone who doesn't respect your opinion, especially when you feel like you could be doing a better job than them. Of course, this can be something of a double-edged sword a lot of the time, and often in ways that a lot of business owners don't initially realize.  The truth is that you are just one person and it's pretty much impossible for a single person to be everything that their business needs. Unless it happens to be incredibly small, like something you're doing part-time out of your spare room, you need to be able to connect with other people if you want your business to succeed. Unsurprisingly, a lot of business owners are a little reluctant to do that so here are just some of the reasons why it's so important.

How it benefits your business

The first and most important thing about being able to reach out to other people is that it really is what's best for your business. After all, as just one person, you're going to be pretty limited in a number of ways and being able to connect with other people and bring them into your business allows you to fill those gaps in your knowledge and skills.

Alternate perspectives

One of the biggest mistakes that a lot of business owners make is that they work on the assumption that they always have the best possible perspective on their business. After all, you're at the top so you can see everything and how it all fits together as clearly as possible. And sure, this is true and it's an incredibly valuable perspective to have. However, it's far from the only, or even best, perspective there is.  The truth is that, as valuable as your bird's eye perspective on your business can be, it is, to some degree limited. You employees are the ones on the ground floor and that means that they have a far more close-up perspective on your business that can give them insights that you may well never have come into contact with at all. The same goes for working with outside agencies and freelancers. There are so many different aspects to running a business that the chances of you understand every single aspect to the same level as those who specialize in things like marketing, recruitment, or manufacturing are pretty slim.

Dedicated equipment

Every business needs the right equipment in order to function, this is as true now as it has always been. However, it's also true that there is more technology in many businesses than ever before thanks to the rise in digital technology. You may have a good idea of what kind of equipment your business needs but there's always a chance that you're going to end up missing things simply because you wouldn't otherwise think of them. Not only that but actually being able to source the equipment that you really need can be a real challenge without the right contacts. From obvious things like computers and software to more specific things like poly water tanks and dedicated manufacturing equipment. Not only does reaching out to other companies to source your equipment make your life easier but it often ensures that the equipment is installed into your business as smoothly and effectively as possible, greatly reducing the chances of something going wrong in the future.

Specific expertise

You very likely have a lot of knowledge and expertise in how to best run your business. After all, without those kinds of skills, you're never going to be able to get a business off the ground in the first place. However, one of the most important things that you can do as a business owner is to understand that your skills are always going to be limited simply because you're just one person. There's only so much one person can know. Because of that, if you try and take care of every single aspect of your business yourself, there's a pretty good chance that the work is always going to suffer because of it. You need to understand that there are those around you who can bring a level of expertise to your business that you couldn't even begin to. This goes for everything from bringing in a marketing team and SEO experts to help get your business seen, to a recruitment agency to help you bring in the right people as employees. Sure, there will be things about which you are the authority but being able to recognize where other people are better suited to the task is one of the most important things that you can do as a business owner.

How it benefits you

Of course, it's not just a matter of taking care of your business. Being able to put areas of your business in the hands of other people can also be incredibly beneficial to you as well. After all, you're still the heart of your business and you need to be able to ensure that you're not falling into the trap of taking on so much that it actually makes it impossible for you to run your business. Sadly, a lot of business owners fail to see how being able to let go of parts of their business can help them. Here are just a couple of the reasons why it's just as good for you as it is for your business.

A learning experience

One of the most dangerous things that any business owner can say is that they think they “know enough.” The truth is that the moment that you think that you understand everything about how to make your business a success, you're going to start falling behind. The modern world moves faster than ever before and that's not something that you can ignore if you want to stay ahead of the pack. Being willing to keep learning no matter what is one of the most important things that you can do as a business owner and there are very few better ways to learn than to spend your time around those with expertise. Being able to connect with both your employees as well as outside agencies and freelancers is one of the best ways to not only place their skills into your business but also shore up some deficiencies in your own understanding as well. It's often easy to feel like you should be the one with all of the knowledge at the owner of your business but being able to understand where your knowledge is lacking and coming to terms with that will allow you to learn from those who really know what they're talking about.

Sharing the burden

This is probably not going to be the most shocking statement in the world but running a business is hard. In fact, it's one of the most challenging things that you will ever do with your life. Because of that, it's incredibly common to feel like you're spinning plates all of the time. It feels like trying to keep on top of every aspect of your business at once is often pretty overwhelming. When you reach this point it not only causes your work to suffer but has the potential to have some pretty serious consequences for your own wellbeing as well. trying to take on too much in your business can impact both your physical and mental health in some pretty significant ways. Business owner burnout can be incredibly dangerous and it's something that far too many people ignore until it's too late. Being able to put things in the hands of other people, whether that's your employees or through outsourcing, allows you to take the time to step away from your business and actually give yourself a break.

If there's one thing that gets in the way of more business owners' potential success, it's ego. Far too often business owners find themselves unable to distinguish between what they want and what's actually best for the business. This is a surprisingly easy trap to fall into. After all, your business is likely to be something that you hold incredibly dear to your heart. It's something that you built yourself from the ground up and the idea of handing some aspect of it over to someone else can be incredibly difficult to come to terms with. However, if you really want to be the leader that your business needs you have to be able to put your own feelings aside for the sake of what is best for your business. And, when it all comes down to it, you are very likely to find that what's best for your business is what's best for you as well.
