Do Your Employees All Have Right To Work?

November 26, 2018

Taking care of the human resources in your business is paramount if you are to keep your business running as strong as possible, so it is something you can’t really overlook. You will also need to make sure that you are looking after the most important areas within this too if you want to keep in control, and one of the most important areas has to be ensuring that your employees all have right to work in the country and industry that you are operating in. Chances are, you are legally bound by right to work legislation, and that means that you need to make sure that you are hiring only those who are legally entitled to work for you. As long as you keep on top of that, you will stay out of trouble, and you will be able to ensure that your workforce is kept strong too, so let’s look into what you might need to do to keep on top of right to work.
Vet All Incoming Employees
One of the most important things you can do is simply an early check regarding the people coming into your business. As long as you vet them in a straightforward and simple manner, you will be able to ensure that you are much less likely to turn into right to work problems in the future. You might be surprised at how much of a difference it can make, and how easy it can be to work out who is and isn’t likely to have right to work in your country or industry. Of course, it’s important to stress that this is not a matter of profiling, racial or otherwise, but ensuring that you are taking all the steps necessary to make sure that all incoming employees are likely to have right to work, before you even carry out further checks, such as the ones discussed below.
Check Identity Records
In most cases, deciding whether someone has right to work is a simple case of checking identity records provided by the individual in question. Depending on the nature of the work, where they are from originally, and many other things, there will be variation in what documents they need to provide. For those who are native to the country you are operating within, a passport will suffice in most cases. For those who are not, they may need to provide a visa as well. You need to both be aware of the documents you need to ask for, and make sure that you are using a reliable ID Check service and system to ensure that the documents you are seeing are genuine.
Interview
The interview stage is important for more than just ensuring that you are finding the best employees. It is also a point at which you can make final checks with regard to their likely right to work, and for this reason you should make sure that you always interview people, whether or not it might initially feel worthwhile to do so.
