February 7, 2019
All too often, people get stuck in a rut regarding their career and job role. It can be easy to coast through your career; however, many people wake up and realise how unhappy, or under-utilised they are in their workplace. Therefore, isn’t it time for a bit of a boost? Career satisfaction and fulfilment isn’t always easy to achieve, but, the hard work certainly pays off when you’ve forgotten about Sunday night doom, and can’t wait to get up first thing Monday morning.
Often, it’s because you’ll be underselling yourself and perhaps lacking a little confidence. It’s important to remember that nobody really knows exactly what they’re doing in a new role, but self-belief, confidence and determination will get you far, so, it’s vital to focus on building-up both. It’s always best to aim higher in your job so that you have plenty of room to grow and develop, rather than becoming stagnant, doing something you’re bored with. The following are some things to consider if you’re ready to be brave regarding your next career move, and need a little push in the right direction.
Further Your Qualifications
Whether you’re in nursing and feel ready to take on a neonatal dnp, or you’re currently teaching, and picture yourself in a lecture hall teaching university students; you’ll need to take action to boost your qualifications. Don’t be put off by time and money; if you’re willing to put the work in, there are an array of ways to gain a higher level of expertise in your chosen field, you just need to know where to find them. There are flexible online courses that you can fit in around your current work schedule, and sometimes there are ways to combine training with your current role so that you’re still receiving a salary, but also learning as you go.
Learn From Your Superior
If you’re within a company, whether it’s banking and finance, or social work and care in the community; there will always be higher paid roles above you, with more responsibilities. If you look at those senior members in the team with a little green-eyed tinge, stop and refocus. It’s time to think about how they got to be in their position, what attributes they have that allows them to successfully manage their role. And, don’t forget, you can always ask them questions; finding support and help in the workplace is an excellent way to open-up opportunities. You’ll let your superiors know that your keen to progress and are focused on developing as the company grows too.
Push Yourself
In order to grab the opportunities when they arise, or better yet, go out and find them; you’ll need to take a deep breath and push yourself. Your comfort zone is, well, comfortable; however, you’ll never get to a higher level if you don’t leave it as much as you can. Do the extra hours at work, make suggestions, implement things; let people know that you’re keen and able to take on the challenge. You’ll be hearing about that promotion in no time!
