Get The Touchstones Right: How We Can Work Better With Our Employees
January 17, 2019
Communication, interaction, and relationships are integral components to working with our employees effectively. As our business relies on the skills and handiwork of our employees, we need to learn the best ways to get the most out of them. It's not just about giving them the orders and expecting them to do as they're told; as employers, we have to draw out the employee we want our of them. How can we work better with our employees?
Learn To Be A Better Employer
It's not just about giving someone a paycheck anymore, we have to make sure that we are doing everything in the best interest of our employees. Being a good employer encompasses so many things, but the very first port of call is being a manager that wins the trust of their employees.
Don't Work On What You Want
It can be easy to focus on our needs, especially when we are struggling to make ends meet, business-wise. It's important to provide that feeling of security in our employees, that they know what they're doing, and why they are doing it. And when we use our own thoughts and feelings to govern our decisions, this is a steady slope into selfishness.
Follow The Rules
Simple, isn't it? We have to follow the rules so we can break them, but not only in terms of the legalities and rules and regulations, but we also have to ensure that, if we have employees that come to us with a professional or personal problem, that we are doing everything by the book. HR is a very muddled minefield on occasion, and it's important that you are up to date with these processes. There are companies like Quest Cover that can keep you up to speed with regards to HR compliance. Because we can focus on the needs of our employees, but still avoid the rules, this is very dangerous territory. And it's important that we know where the line is drawn.
Focus On The “Feeling”
Workplace culture and the environment are integral components of a thriving workplace. Working better with employees isn't just about improving our one-on-one relationship with them, it's about focusing on the environment and turning it into an atmosphere where people want to come to work, despite the job they are doing. If you focus on the feeling, productivity and focus will follow. Some people don't like their job, but they like the people. This is one small example of how you can make an organization into something that draws people in. When you have employees who work with that spring in their step, you don't need to enforce rules and targets. But for those companies that live or die by those strict rules, you can see that the life has been sucked out of the company and the employees!
We need to work better with our employees but it's not something that happens overnight. If you get the touchstones right, like the culture, but also being a leader that leads by example, you will organically turn the company into a better working environment.
