September 11, 2018
Life can throw us curve balls when we least expect it, don’t you think? It doesn’t matter how old we are, what we are doing at that precise moment, rich, poor, in love, on our own. Life can be full of champagne but easily be filled with bitter lemons at a moments notice. Often we don’t really know what path we should be taking, we just go with what feels right, what we think we should be doing, or just basically making the best out of the deck of cards we have been dealt. So what is next when life can be ever-changing? If you find yourself at crossroads don’t despair. I wanted to share with you some of the things that you could consider to help you make the right decision on what might be next for you.
Is education the best path?
One of the first things to think about would be education and whether you want to ocnitijnhue studying for something, get into the world of work or volunteer so you can figure things out. Often going back to education can really open your eyes up to the possibilities that are out there and help you push yourself to the next level.
Learn something new and go back to school
Maybe learning is going to be the right thing for you, and perhaps you want to study to work towards gaining qualifications and degrees in specific areas or industry. This can be a great way to understand what career you want to take. Whether you decide to study from home or attend a university, the experience not just the studying can really help you decide on what you want from life moving forward.
Taking a job that’s linked to your degree
Once you have gained your qualifications and degrees you may be wondering what is next and there are number of things you can do with it. You could continue your educational journey, be more specific in the areas you work in and learn on the job. You could use your degree to gain a graduate job where you can be given an underlying overview of a company and a different role to play, there is more information here about how this could be a good option for you. Or you may have done all you can with the educational side of things and secure yourself a job that is specific to your degree and qualifications. It can certainly help give you direction.
Why not take some time out?
Sometimes we all need a bit of a break and time for reflection, and taking some time out in the from of a GAP year, be that between educational trimesters or after and between jobs, can often be just what is needed to help you gain some perspective on what it is you have going on. Here are some of the ways you could spend that time.
Travel
Traveling is often the most popular way to spend a GAP year, and many students backpack across different countries, exploring their hidden gems and enjoying experiences like no other. Traveling to remote parts of the world can also give you a new perspective on life and how you see things. Which can often change you as a person and help you later on in life.
Volunteer and gain work experience
Maybe you want to use the time out for something good, and volunteering can be a great way to do it. Not only sure you doing good for someone or something, but you are also gaining valuable work experience in a different environment, which could help you seek out employment in the future. Volunteering can be something you do sporadically, or you could choose to focus on it full time.
What’s your ambition in life?
Often we can forget about the bigger picture. We can be so focused on what is going on in the here and now, we can forget that many of us will have dreams and aspirations to achieve things in life in the future. So when making big decisions about your next step, you do need to take the time to really understand what your ambition in life is, and where you want to see yourself in ten, twenty and thirty Years down the line. It may seem far into the future, but it can sometimes help you make the right choice for now.
Have a family
Maybe now is the time to start thinking about whether you want a family in the future. The choices we make now could really affect our chances of that if we don’t remember that in the long term this is something we want to do. You need to think about your career path, whether you can take a break from it, and what you want to be able to achieve by the time you want children in your life.
Start your own business and work for yourself
Who knows, you long term ambition might be to work for yourself? You won’t be alone. Many people have the aspirations and ambitions to become their own boss at some point in their lives. It may be that they want the chance to become self sufficient, maybe freelance where they get to pick and choose the hours they work and what they earn. Or it could be the long term goal of having your own successful business that you started from nothing. If this is the plan, you will know that having the idea of what you want to do combined with the experience of doing it can make all of the difference.
Retire early
Your ambition in life might be to retire at your earliest opportunity, and why wouldn’t you want to? Retirement can often be seen as the golden chapter of your life.Having worked hard for many years you may have built up a tidy sum that you can then enjoy with your nearest and dearest. You could travel and tick off those places on your bucket list. You can start up new hobbies and make new friends. The earlier you do it, the more enjoyment you will have. If retiring early is what you want todos then working hard to create the savings and money to afford the lifestyle you want is going to be a high priority.
Is working for yourself a good decision?
Sometimes you need to take a step back and decide whether what you want in life is going to be achievable, and often that can mean a reality check. In terms of working for yourself, you need to ask yourself whether that really is the best idea? Some people are better earning money for companies and can often be better off financially doing so as well. Others have a knack for self employment and can turn nothing into something. Which one are you?
Do you have the skills and do you know what you want to do
One of the biggest obstacles you face when deciding on working for yourself is whether youa have the skills and the knowledge to do it, but above all else having the idea of what you want. Sometimes this can hit you when you least expect it, other times it may take a while to really figure it out.
What is important?
Finally, what is important overall in life. The answer is simple, to be healthy and to be happy. All of the above can work alongside those two main goals in terms of what you do with your time. But ultimately if you are healthy and happy you could be seen as wealthy on life.
I hope that this has given your something to think about in terms of your next steps.
