Why You Should Regularly Sort Out Your Business Storage Units

June 10, 2019

All of us are guilty of taking the “out of sight, out of mind” attitude in life. It’s easy to put things away and forget about them if they’re not constantly there to remind us and storage is one of those things. You put your items away in storage to get them out of the way and free up space in your home or business, but once they’re gone, they can easily become forgotten altogether.

But here’s a few reasons why you should keep a regular check storage units, as a little frequent sorting can save you a lot of time, hassle, stress and in some cases money.

Taking Stock

Regardless of what you use your storage unit for, be it storing unused furniture and household items, building materials, tools, merchandise or business records, you should always know exactly what’s in there. This doesn’t need to be a weekly check, but taking a little time to sort through your unit on a regular basis can help you to manage your storage requirements more efficiently. For example, if you’re regularly taking and or replacing items from your unit such as business stock, you may find you don’t actually need such a large space and could downsize to a smaller unit and save yourself money. Plus, it can also help you identify any stocking issues quicker and more easily, so you don’t’ run short. This is why easy access self storage is a must, so you have no problem taking stock.

Better organisation

In addition to making a regular note of what’s in your unit, having a regular sort through can also help you to keep it more organised at your business. It’s often the case that when you first load up your unit, items are just thrown in without much thought for organisation. But with a regular sort through you can spend the time getting your unit in order, labelling boxes and items. This will make finding things much more straightforward and less time-consuming, rather than having to go through every box, as well as help you to utilise the space more effectively.

Spotting damage to your belongings

Leaving items sitting in a storage unit for a long time can also leave them exposed to damage from water, damp, dirt and pests. If you don’t regularly sort through your unit, you could miss obvious signs of water damage or pest problems that can cause irreparable damage to your possessions. However, doing a frequent sort through the entire unit from top to bottom, front to back, should help you spot any signs early, so you can find a solution to limit the damage caused.

Identifying damage to your unit

While you’re sorting through your own possessions, this is also a good opportunity to check the unit for damage as well to ensure there are no leaks or faulty locks. You can also ensure that the right site security measures are being carried out too.
