The Importance Of Workplace Health & Safety For Your Small Business

October 21, 2015

As a small business owner, I know that there are lots of things out there you have to be aware of. Running a business isn’t as easy as you might think. There are certain issues that don’t seem big, but can actually have a huge impact on your business.
One of those issues is health & safety. It’s a very important part of business that not many people think about. They don’t understand how important proper health & safety is to a business. To explain things in more detail, I’ve got two reasons why health & safety is so important in the workplace.
Health & Safety Laws
The main reason health & safety is so important is because of the law. There are laws in place that demand all buildings must be at a certain standard. No matter where your workplace is, it will have to abide by these laws. You have to ensure that your office is up to the required standard for health & safety. If it isn’t, there could be trouble around the corner.
Throughout the year, an organisation will come in and perform health & safety checks. They’ll scour over every detail of your workplace, making sure it’s up to scratch. If they find any major issues, they could shut down your business. Now, they may only shut it down for a limited time, until you right all the wrongs. Or, if things are severe, your business could be shut down permanently. So, it’s important to take health & safety seriously because it could cost you your business!
Premises Liability
Another reason why health & safety is so important is down to your employees. You have to make sure that your employees are safe at work. There should be nothing unsafe that can damage their health. Premises liability refers to when something happens to an employee in your workplace. If they get into an accident on your premises, you’ll be liable. This means you could end up in a long court battle with an employee over a workplace accident. Zaner Harden attorneys say that it’s the responsibility of the property owner to provide a safe environment. If you’re not doing that, there’s room for a case to be made against you if anyone gets hurt/injured.
So, health & safety is important because, without proper health & safety, your employees are at risk. And, you’re also at risk. Employees could get injured due to an unsafe workplace, and you could get sued as a result. It can cost your business because you’ll be paying out compensation. But it can also cost your business because you’ll be low on staff if they all keep getting hurt in the workplace. If you’re low on staff, business productivity will be very low. This then means you could end up making less money. In short, not paying attention to health & safety can take its toll on your business finances.
To sum things up, you can now see how important workplace health & safety is. If your small business doesn’t pay attention to it, you could see yourself get shut down. All that hard work down the drain because you didn’t pay attention to health & safety. Or, you could end up with lots of injured employees that will end up costing you a tonne of money.
