Ways That You Can Kick Start Your Fitness Business

June 26, 2019

Starting a new business is never easy. It takes passion, dedication, and – most of all – a lot of hard work. A lot of people think that just because you start a business in an area you love, it will automatically be successful. But unfortunately, that isn’t necessarily the case. If you love fitness and you want to start your very own fitness business, here are a few tips that will help you on your way.

Make A Plan

First and foremost, you need to do what any smart person does when they contemplate starting a business: you need to make a plan. Decide what exactly you want from your business and what your goals are. Being woolly about it means that when you’re actually going, you will be uncertain about what you want and where you want to go, so it’s important to have concrete goals before you actually start. You might want to start your own string of gyms, or you might want to give yoga classes, or you might just want to organise a parkrun. No matter what exactly you want to do, how big or how small, you need a plan.

Check Your Market

It’s important to ensure that you do some market research to check that what you want to do is actually a good idea in the area in which you want to do it. Not everywhere needs a small, bouji yoga studio that sells expensive green shakes. Likewise, there are some areas that won’t appreciate a back to basics gym. Talk to people as much as you can and figure out what exactly they want from their fitness so that you can make what you do appropriate to your local market.

Get Financially Smart

Before you start a business – and particularly before you quit your day job and sink all your savings into your new business – you need to make sure that you’re financially savvy. If this is something that has always baffled you, you need to assign some of your money towards paying an accountant. Being self-employed is vastly different from being employed by a company: you don’t want to be surprised when you have to pay taxes, and you don’t want to accidentally cut corners that you shouldn’t be cutting. You also want to make sure that you’re saving as much money as you can. Talking to an accountant is the best way to go about this.

Learn To Network

One of the best ways that new young businesses get off the ground is through word of mouth, so networking is very often key to your success. Chat to people with similar interests, hand out your business cards, and learn how to get along with other people in a way that makes you easy to talk to: ask questions, make eye contact (but not too much!) and make sure that you’re actually listening to what they’re saying to you. Don’t push your business down their throats, but make sure they’re aware of what you’re doing.

Get Yourself Qualified

It’s important to make sure that you’re absolutely at the top of your game. No matter how good you are at deadlifting, you aren’t necessarily qualified to instruct other people on how to do it. Get yourself qualified as a gym instructor – a certificate 4 in fitness is a great step there – and learn as much as you can about physiology, about the body, about diets, about different ways that different people respond to exercise. Your own experiences are not enough to guide other people through their fitness journeys, so it’s time to broaden your mind and take in the way that other people view their own fitness.

Start To Market Yourself

It’s important to figure out how exactly you want to market yourself. Do you want to be your selling point and the face of the brand? In that case, you need to set up social media accounts – you can use them to post videos of yourself working out and giving advice, for example. If you don’t want to be so public then consider how exactly you want to brand your business and if you need someone to be the gleaming face of it. Considering yourself as a brand and a product is a great way to figure out how to sell your business to others. In that way, you also need to make sure that your conduct is fitting: be reliable, be entirely trustworthy. Remember that word gets around quickly, and you don’t want to be your own downfall!

Creating a fitness business can be difficult, but absolutely doable – if you love the gym, you’re definitely not afraid of a little hard work.
