Web Design Trends to Watch Out for in 2019
December 10, 2018
Trends change all of the time. Fashions come and go, what’s in style in winter 2018, is very different to the fashions of 2017 and before. Web design is no different. In the early days of the internet establishing and becoming used by a wider audience, the websites that we created for ourselves and our businesses were often bright and bold. We wanted to catch people’s attention, show off our skills and have some fun with our new platform, and using clashing colours and dramatic fonts seemed the best way to do it. Over time, things have changed. Our tastes have become more sophisticated, and we’ve found more subtle ways to show off. Here are some of the web design trends that you should be watching out for in the coming months.
White Space
White space has been popular for a while but it’s a trend that shows no signs of slowing and it’s easy to see why. White space lets the content and other design elements like the photography do the talking. It’s smart, sophisticated, easy to look at and appealing on the eye, it also gives you a chance to incorporated other design trends, without overwhelming your readers — something that a web design company can help you with.
Embedded Videos
Video is becoming a much bigger part of the internet. Social media is full of shared videos, and platforms like Snapchat are boosting the popularity of vanishing video as a way to communicate and share. This is being reflected in the layout of our websites. Video is no longer for separate sites like YouTube, they are becoming part of web pages, much like photographs and infographics.
Bright Colours
Colours come into fashion and leave it with the seasons. The colours that we see online, often reflect those that we see on the high streets and the catwalks. Bright and bold colours work well with white space to highlight important information. Stick to bright colours on titles, buttons and other accents to avoid overpowering.
Simplicity
Simple designs are great. They highlight what needs it, and underplay what doesn’t. A simple design also ensures that your pages load quickly and work well.
Unique Fonts
Many companies are now designing their own fonts, instead of using generic fonts like everyone else. A unique font, especially on your logo and tagline, sets you apart and makes your site a one of a kind, even with a simple design and colour scheme.
Mobile First
For the first time, we see mobile usage of websites overtake tablets and desktops. Your web design should reflect that most of your viewers will be on a smaller screen. Keeping things simple is a great start. But, always make sure that you design with mobile views in mind, instead of checking that your site looks great on a small screen as an afterthought.
Shapes
Shapes, both geometric and curved are a great way to show a little personality and add some colour, without going too far. Include shapes and neat lines to add some creativity without overcomplicating.
