What do you want from life?
November 28, 2018
Knowing what you want from life is not easy; what you want can change which is not a bad thing. You change and grow, and so do your thoughts, opinions and needs. In your twenties your priorities are massively different, perhaps you were looking for Supply Teaching Jobs one minute and then DJing the next. In your thirties, many people want to settle down, get married, get a mortgage and job security is important to them. Having goals and working towards them will keep you moving in the right direction.
Some people know what they want straight away, whether it’s career or family life, some have known what they want since they were children, for others, it takes time to work out. However, if you ask yourself a few questions you should be closer to figuring it out:
If you won the lottery tomorrow and money was no issue, what would you do?
Many would quickly say they’d be off on a private jet, travelling the world, staying in luxury hotels every night – but realistically, would they? If they would then travel would surely be their passion now? Really think about what would you want to change in your life or would you want it to stay the same? Do you love your job? Would you take a course in something that you can’t do now because you have to work? Take away all the limits and think about what you would truly do.
What are you passionate about?
Some people like work and hobbies to be separate, others want to spend every day doing something they love. Finding the balance can be tough but life is short and if there is something you want to be doing rather than working in a dull office, then change it. If you’re passionate about music, cars, sports – whatever it may be, then fulfill your life with that passion.
What have you achieved so far?
Sometimes you take for granted what you already have, and it’s a good idea to take a step back and look at what you have already achieved. Enjoy it, don’t let it pass you by – you worked for it, you earned it, and you should celebrate that, or it’ll be wasted.
Who do you admire most?
Admiring others doesn’t necessarily mean someone like Richard Branson, it could be your Grandmother or your teacher that you admired. Work out why, what is it about them and how have they achieved what they wanted to. Do you want the same as them or do you just want to have their work ethic or attitude?
What do you not want?
This is easier to work out, either you’ve been in positions you don’t want to be in again, or you have friends who might be very happy but you know what they’ve got isn’t right for you. If you can eliminate some things you don’t want from life, then you’ll be a lot closer to working out what you do want.
