What Does the Perfect Creative Workspace Look Like?

January 22, 2020

Creativity doesn’t happen in a vacuum. If you want to have good ideas, staring at a plain white wall and doing very little is unlikely to help. Instead, you should give your mind something to do. This is why creative businesses tend to have such amazing offices!

The perfect office design means different things to different businesses. If you want to create an office where your employees can play with ideas, you need to create a space for that play to happen. If you want your employees to be able to talk to each other and collaborate more, meeting spaces are essential. If you want a little of everything, you have a challenge to be sure, but not an impossible one.

Space to Play

Play is really important to all animals. It’s how we learn and experiment with different ideas in a safe setting. Whether you are playing with an idea by improvising a scene or by building something with lolly sticks and glu, play allows you to think different and expand your perspective. For people with self-limiting beliefs, play can be the best way to discover new potential without inducing anxiety.

In an office, a space to play should be invigorating and filled with potential. Colorful surroundings, suitable lighting and comfortable seating are all essential, regardless of what you plan to do but you should also think about incorporating a large table, computers and other technologies.

Space to Think

While play can spark an idea, sometimes you just need time to mull things over. Gathering information and inspiration is one thing but figuring out how to transform a concept into a product or a more concrete idea needs time.

Being able to step away and think is a luxury that many employers fail to give their employees. However, a recent trend for recharge rooms might suggest that change is on the horizon. Though you might not have the funding for a spa therapist on the premises, setting a small space aside where your employees can sit and relax could do surprising things to their creativity. After all, lots of great ideas are dreamed up when the brain is idling.

Space to Talk

Talking is fundamental to business. After all, speech is the best way to communicate an idea and build on new ideas too. Creating a separate space in your office for holding meetings is, therefore, really important. However, how you design that space can have a big impact.

A large formal meeting room may not inspire people in the same way that a couple of comfy sofas might. Similarly, choosing to hold a meeting outside or even while you are walking around the block could influence the way you speak to each other. And have you considered what your clients might think too?

Creativity needs the right space and the right opportunities too. But space isn’t the whole story – you also have to encourage your team to make the most of what they have. In fact, bringing the whole team on board to redesign your office could be a very good idea.
