Why It Never Hurts To Get Help As An Entrepreneur
November 22, 2019
Part of that entrepreneurial edge is that self-sufficiency, that “you can do it all yourself” attitude. This is, by no means, a bad thing, but if we feel that we can get ourselves out of problems purely by relying on our own instincts and resources, we could have a shock to the system further down the line! Getting help, especially as an entrepreneur, is no bad thing. But why should we get help, and what can it do for us?
You Don't Know Everything, Do You?
We're not putting you down, it's just the fact that you may feel too proud to ask for help on occasion. This business that you've built up with your own hands can feel like your baby. As such, you want to know every little detail even if you don't have the ability to understand it. There's no shame in saying that you're not mathematically minded. Some people aren't! But when you start to look at the business and really think about the financial components, is it time to get an accountant or a strategic pricing analyst on board so that you have a different opinion? The great thing about having someone else on board is that they can fill in your your knowledge gaps. We can't claim to know everything. And in fact, the person that claims to know everything will always be too proud to ask for help. There is no point in cutting off your nose to spite your face.
There Is Nothing Wrong With Being Quizzical
We can still believe that, even in the modern world, asking a question or wanting some help is seen as a sign of weakness. Everybody wants to puff out their chests and be “the big I am,” and as we start to learn about our own individual weaknesses, it's natural that we ask questions. It's important to be that person in the classroom that puts their hand up and says that they don't understand something. And they say that if you want to be a successful entrepreneur, you should be the stupidest person in the room. There is nothing wrong with a curious mindset. The person that asks questions will learn more than the person that keeps their mouth shut.
It Gives You The Opportunity To Heed The Advice
You might find that asking for help is difficult, but this is the first step towards taking advice. As an entrepreneur, you will learn by your mistakes, but it's also important to learn from other people's mistakes as well. There is no point in being defensive when you receive words of wisdom from more experienced entrepreneurs. It's very easy to adopt an attitude where you don’t need any advice but this is the first step towards failure. You don’t need to take the advice on board, but at least listen to it first!
Getting help is crucial; it will help you grow, but it is about getting out of your own way. Trim that ego and ask for help if you need it!
