What Do Young People Want From Work?

January 22, 2019

As an entrepreneur and employer, you will need to always be thinking about your workforce. This is especially the case once your business has been up and running for a few years, and you start to replace older employees. You might find that the workforce itself starts to change as you bring in a lot of young talent. These younger workers will be millennials and generation Z, and they will all have a lot of different values and desires compared to older generations of workers. As their boss, you need to make sure that these are met and that they feel like they are able to thrive in the working environment that you provide them with.
If you are going to please your younger workers, you need to find out what they want and expect from work. Here are some things they will want you to provide them with.
A Steady Wage
One of the main things that we all want from our job is a steady wage. There doesn’t seem to be much certainty in the world these days, so at the very least workers want an income that they can rely on. That way, they can save up enough to have a financial safety net behind them. So, make sure you offer a fair wage and that your workers are all paid on time at the end of each month.
Something They Can Believe In
One of the most defining things about millennials and gen Z is that they are two very passionate generations. They care deeply about social causes and important matters like the environment. So, many from these generations are now looking to work in companies that share these values and passions. Websites like Atkins Global now aim to pair up younger job seekers with these kinds of companies. If you think that your business will give young workers the chance to work in a sector that they are passionate about, you should use the site to link up with them.
Good Work-Life Balance
Lots of workers are now very aware of how too much work can affect their stress levels and can lead to burning out. Because of this, most young people will only consider working for companies that can offer them a good work-life balance. They want the guarantee that they won’t be expected to work any unpaid overtime. They also expect plenty of paid days off for vacations and sickness as well.
Flexible Working
Thanks to the internet, working from home is now possible for the majority of jobs. Lots of millennials and gen Z workers appreciate this being available to them as they can then manage their work around the rest of their life. If you do provide some flexible working, then you will find it very beneficial as your younger workers won’t be so inclined to burnout and become demotivated in the office.
Hopefully, all of these points help you make your company a lot more attractive to the younger generations of workers!
