Five years ago I was coerced into creating my first podcast, a duet of a show with my friend Garry Aylott, host of the UK's finest Doctor Who podcast and also, our own Star Wars weekly show, Spark of Rebellion. Without this guy, I wouldn't be doing a single thing that I'm doing now!

5 years ago today I launched my first ever personally branded podcast with immense support from the podcasting community. Today, I’m looking back with gratitude AND re-publishing that first episode so that you can hear the change – because our first time is always awkward!

I'm a firm believer in podcasters building and acting like, from day one, a brand. And a brand is more than audio, a brand is an experience which is why, as part of my International Podcast Day celebrations, I'm spotlighting one of the best niche podcasters in the world, Carm Capriotto!

As we approach International Podcast Day, I'm spending the next week or so highlighting independent podcasters who I feel are doing a great job of building a brand around their voice – first up, Steve Lazarus from Your London Legacy.

Argh, more work to do for your podcast! Not so long ago, not very many podcast apps supported episode level cover art but now, rightly so, it's rife and outlets like Spotify are even creating it for you if you don't create it yourself – the time is right to controll your audio brand and episode level artwork is a big part of the experience.

Memberships are superb, they allow “passive” income – well, kinda. The truth is that so many podcasters aim for a membership income stream without realising two key things: they're a TON of work and you NEED an audience, and I mean a real audience!

Podcasting is hyper-personal, perhaps the most personal of any content medium. And, as podcasting grows the power is in creating a tribe of people who love you and your personality – so why are you only being 60% “real”?
